Annual Sheriff Lecture took place on November 27. This year鈥檚 distinguished speaker
was Dr. Craig Shipp from Shell. His presentation, titled 鈥淲here Offshore Drilling
Meets Shallow Geology: Impact of Near-surface Depositional Systems on Deepwater Operations,鈥�
summarized geohazards encountered in offshore and onshore drilling. More than 110
people attended the event held at the Norris Conference Center Houston CityCentre.
The UH EAS department also presented its annual alumni awards to Dr. Karen Love (Geology M.S. 鈥�85, Ph.D. 鈥�90) and Dr. Alex Woronow (Geology M.S. 鈥�73), both of whom are retired from ExxonMobil.

place during the cocktail hour. A panel of faculty, alumni and industry volunteers
evaluated the 33 student entries. There were two categories this year, Ph.D. and Undergraduate/M.S.
