Our Goal: Mutually Beneficial Collaborations

The Third Ward Initiative is first and foremost a collaborative partnership with the Third Ward community and others. 探花视频 faculty and students combine their intellectual talents and physical energies on projects and initiatives mutually beneficial to community groups and organizations. Student enhance their value to future employers by using in the real-world environment the skills learned in the classroom while simultaneously developing cultural competency. Faculty obtain knowledge and contacts useful to their research and/or teaching. The community organization are strengthened by the campus inputs and the residents realize a better quality of life in the areas of health, educational outcomes, and economic prospects. The art and cultural collaborations celebrate the culture and history of our shared community.

  • Education

    Transform academic achievement ratios of six schools.

    The six schools include four elementary schools: Blackshear, Foster,

    Thompson & Hartsfield, Cullen Middle School, and Yates Senior High School.Education

    • Help student teachers meet their academic requirements and supply schools with qualified student tutors who are paid through grant funding
    • Meet kindergarten school readiness standards
    • Improve STAAR test scores
    • Install book kiosks and implement 1:1 reading programs
    • Improve graduation and college attendance rates
  • Economic Empowerment

    Help launch 25 businesses over 5 years.

    • Use UH Bauer College of Business students as consultants who guide potential entrepreneurs in the development of business plansEconomic Empowerment
    • Expose potential entrepreneurs to successful business owners and executives
    • Provide law students in the UH Law Center clinic opportunities to advise potential entrepreneurs 
  • Health

    Increase health care services using UH students in healthcare academic programs.

    • Through health fairs and other services reduce the prevelance of obesity, STIs, and substance abuse Health
    • Open a health care clinic open to the community that serves as a training facility to UH medical students
    • Connect UH students majoring in health fields and social work with churches and community organizations
  • Arts

    Increase a shared association through art and culture.

    • Share and exchange visual and performing arts with the communityArts
    • Establish a fellowship program in partnership with Project Row Houses (PRH)  where graduate students learn about socially engaged art in a course taught by Professor Rick Lowe, the co-founder of PRH
    • Partner with the community to expose residents to music, and the arts
