Below are questions that students frequently have about the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy. Click on the question to see the answer.
How do I apply for the program?
First, students must attend an information session. Once students attend an information session, they will receive an email with the application link.
When should I apply for the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy?
After attending an information session, students will have until April 10 to apply.
Is the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy going to be in person or online?
The 2025 TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy program will be held in person.
When will I be notified whether I have been accepted into the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy?
Notifications about application status will be send by May 6.
Do I have to attend an information session to be considered for the program?
Yes, you must attend an information session for your application to be considered complete. Information sessions are an opportunity for you and your parents/guardians to get additional information about the program, ask questions, and meet with previous Summer Scholars Academy students.
How much does it cost to participate in the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy?
The program covers the cost of tuition, fees and program sponsored events. Orientation ($150) and parking are not covered.
What classes will I take in the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy?
The program will cover ALL the content for Calculus 1. If you pass the final exam, at the end of the summer, you will earn Calculus credit. If you do not pass the end-of-summer exam, you will be well prepared for taking Calculus in the fall. You will also receive a preview of Fundamentals of Chemistry and receive College Success (CORE 1101) content.
If I AM currently in AP Calculus in high school, can I bypass the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy and be admitted into my first-choice major?
Unfortunately, you cannot use AP Calculus to be admitted into your first-choice.
Can I take Calculus 1 somewhere else during the summer and get into my first-choice major?
No, the only way you can be admitted into your first-choice major in NSM or Engineering for Fall 2023 is to successfully complete the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy program.
If I took Calculus 1 as a dual credit course in high school, can I bypass the TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy and be admitted to my first-choice major?
If you have taken Calculus 1 as a dual credit, you are not eligible to participate in SSA.
Taking Calculus during the summer seems hard. What kind of support will I get to help me pass?
Taking Calculus during the summer is very challenging, but we have embedded special support initiatives, such as math facilitators, peer mentors, workshops, and tutoring into the program to help you succeed.
What does the average day in TC Energy Summer Scholars Academy look like?
Below is the tentative schedule.
Successful students typically spend 3鈥4 hours each day, outside of class time, doing homework, quizzes and preparing for class.
Are the workshops, recitation sessions and chemistry course mandatory?
Yes, these special support initiatives are required to help increase your chances for success and provide good study habits for the rest of your college career.
How many days can I miss?
We encourage students not to miss any days because the program is accelerated. Missing 1 day during the summer is equivalent to missing 1 week during the regular academic semester. Once a student misses more than 2 consecutive days or 3 total days, they may be asked to withdraw from the program.
Can I stay on campus during the program?
Yes, students can stay on campus. For more information about housing, go to www.uh.edu/housing/prospective-residents/.
Are there housing scholarships available? If so, how do I qualify?
We have had a limited AMount of housing scholarships available to students. To be considered for a housing scholarship, students must:
- Attend an information session.
- Complete the Summer Scholars Academy application and select 鈥淵es鈥 for the question 鈥淲ould you like to be considered for a housing scholarship?鈥 under the Housing Scholarship section.
- Attend a virtual interview. Dates will be determined by February 1, 2025.
Can I work during the summer?
Yes, you can work during the program, but you may not work Monday-Friday 9 AM to 5 PM. Please keep in mind there will be a lot of homework associated with Calculus and Chemistry. Past Summer Scholars Academy students spent 3-4 hours each night preparing outside of class.
What happens if I do not pass the credit by exam Calculus I test at the end of the summer?
If you do not pass the credit by exam test at the end of the summer, you will retake the math placement exam. Based on your score, you will be enrolled in Precalculus or Calculus 1 for the fall.
How many students can participate?
The program accepts approximately 55 students.
How much does the program cost?
The program covers the cost of tuition and fees, but does not include parking, meals or transportation.
